Gwen
When Gwen was discovered in a ditch, the vet said this foal weighed less than a Collie dog, and her rescuers could carry her to their 4 x 4.
Lluest staff made Gwen a pen in their living room where the little orphan slept cuddled up to a giant teddy bear donated by a volunteer, no doubt missing the warmth and comfort of her own mother.
Despite bouts of painful colic and coughing caused by her dreadful parasite burden, and thanks to the dedication of the staff at Lluest, this tough little cookie gradually pulled through.
Connie
Imagine finding a tiny foal alone and hungry, trying to feed from her thin dead mother on the ground. This is the heart-wrenching scene that greeted rescuers from the Lluest Horse and Pony Trust.
In one of the saddest and most upsetting rescues they had experienced, Lluest’s welfare team and vets, had to catch the terrified foal and gently guide her from her mother’s corpse to the ambulance.
The rescue had come just in time for this poorly little mite who was only two or three weeks old and needed feeding every two hours around the clock to save her life.
Rescue is just the beginning for equines like Gwen and Connie - they need intensive ongoing care and rehabilitation. That’s why we had to step in and help secure a brighter future for them.
Shelter disaster!
When Storm Darragh hit in December 2024, the horses survived unscathed, but Lluest's field shelter was a casualty - it was completely blown down! Our donation helped re-build the crucial building that provides much needed shelter for the rescue horses & ponies.
